08 13       COAL PRICE CONTENTION

I have heard a great many expressions made about the coal business since our great benefactor has sprang up, claiming he will sell from 2,000 to 3,000 ton of coal, at about 50 cents per ton below any regular dealer.  It was foolish to pay any attention to his talk.  The old saying is "a barking dog never bites;" but, unfortunately my neighbor, Mr. McGolrick, got angry and cut the price.  My reason for getting angry is greater than his, and I have to meet the opposition of a former partner, who is taking orders for another dealer, under the pretense that he is now a partner of said dealer.

I came to the conclusion if our regular dealers would cut and slash, I would not remain in the rear, therefore, I will, until further notice, sell the same coal we have been handling at a cut price of $6.30 per ton, cash, extra charge of 25 cents per ton for carrying, for immediate delivery.

Our new beginner claims we have been robbing the public.  If he will figure the cost of coal I think he will come to the conclusion that he is robbing himself.  I claim selling coal at $6.50 is a loss of 20 cents per ton to any dealer that handles good coal and cleans it.

The reason why I say immediate delivery is people have been holding back with their orders, and if they keep doing so for a few weeks longer, cars will be used for handling of grain and then it will be impossible to get coal fast enough to supply the demands.

10 02       HUBER'S LUMBER YARD

For convenience and excellent appointments, Theo. Huber's lumber yard [401 Clyman] will rank among the best, since the recent erection of a shed for the storage of lumber.  The shed is a block in length, about 100 feet wide and 50 feet high, and will hold an immense stock of building material.   WR

03 13       FIRE IN VICINITY OF

At 11 o'clock last night an alarm of fire called the department to the stock yards of the Milwaukee Road near the Third Street crossing, where a blaze had in some manner started.  The firemen extinguished it promptly, with but slight damage resulting.  Had the fire gained headway the loss might have been considerable, as Theodore Huber's lumberyard is in close proximity.   WR

07 01       BURGLARS AT WORK

Early last Friday evening burglars entered the office of the Watertown Lumber & Coal Co. at 401 Clyman Street, ransacking the safe and desk drawers, securing about $1 for their trouble.   WG
