Robert J. Schmeichel

1924 - 2011

 

Robert J. Schmeichel passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at the Watertown Regional Medical Center at the age of 86.

 

Robert was born on July 29, 1924, in Watertown and was the son of Alfred “Doc” and Magdalena (Berg) Schmeichel.  After graduating from Watertown Senior High School he joined the Army and served in the Philippines and Japan during World War II.  When he returned from his years of service, Robert married Arlene Nyle Shook on Nov. 27, 1947.

 

Robert was employed with Wisconsin Electric Power Co. for 35 years, until retiring in 1987.  He loved spending time with family and friends.  Robert was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Watertown.  He was also a member of the Watertown Elks Lodge, American Legion Post No. 189 and the Maxwell Street Marching & Frog Legger’s Society.  He enjoyed golfing, bowling and fishing in his free time and was a devoted Packer fan.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (James) Bentz of Brookfield; a niece, Susie (Milo) Shackley of Watertown; a nephew, James (Carol) Fredrich of Watertown. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Arlene; sister, Neva; and son, David.

 

Memorials to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church would be appreciated.

 

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Father Mark Moore officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church.  Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Watertown.
