Susan H. Finnel

1944 - 2017

 

Susan H. Finnel, 72, of Watertown, passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, after losing her hard-fought battle with cancer.  A private family burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown at a later date.

 

Susan was born on Oct. 16, 1944, to Herbert and Genevieve (Fredrick) Gerbitz.  She graduated from Watertown High School in 1962 and her deep sense of patriotism led her to join the United States Marine Corps in 1963, serving until 1966.

 

Susan worked for GB Lewis and Hevi-Duty in Watertown.  She was also employed at Carnation in Jefferson, and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 695 in Madison.

 

Susan was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Clyman and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Watertown.  Susan married Robert Finnel on Aug. 14, 1980.

 

Susan loved her country and was very proud to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Throughout her life, she very much enjoyed volunteering her time to the Democratic Party for various causes and traveling across the United States, as well as abroad with her husband Bob.

 

Susan is survived by her husband, Robert Finnel; sisters, Dawn Gerbitz, Shirley (Gerbtiz) Saniter and Faye (Gerbitz) Petig; brother-in-law, William Saniter; stepchildren, Shawn (Shelley) Finnel, Melissa Finnel and Michael (Tiffany) Finnel; grandchildren, Corey, Wesley and Sydney Watanabe, Ryan, Ellen, Brett and Lily Finnel and Sean Dougherty; as well as other cousins, nieces, nephews and family members.

 

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Earl Gerbitz; sister, Janice (Gerbitz) Edwards; sister, Doreen (Gerbitz) Nelson; and brothers-in-law, Richard Nelson and Donald Petig.

Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family.
