William Black

Black, William, b. May 15, 1824, d. Mar 28, 1901


The death of William Black took place at an early hour last Thursday morning at his residence, North Warren Street. The deceased came to Watertown nearly a half century ago and was numbered among our pioneer citizens.


He was a native of Armagh, County Tyrone, Ireland, where he was born May 15, 1824, being therefore nearly 77 years of age.


In the spring of 1850 Mr. Black was married to Eliza Barber, and three years later he and his wife came to America, locating at first in Albany, N. Y., and a short time afterward settling permanently in this city. 


For many years Mr. Black was a trusted employee of Woodard & Stone, and, he was known to all as a man of the highest Christian principle, a most excellent citizen and a kind, neighborly friend.


He is survived by three daughters and two sons, as follows: Mrs. Sara J. King, Chippewa Falls; Mrs. Martha Wilber, Madison; Mrs. Mary Hoffer, this city, Henry Black, Fall River, and William Black, this city.


The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, with services conducted at the house by Rev. A. M. Bullock,.pastor of the M. E. Church.


Interment was at Oak Hill cemetery.
