02 14       JEFFERSON STAND PIPE UNFROZEN . . . . With Help from Watertown

The water in our stand pipe was frozen to a considerable thickness last week, causing more or less trouble.  Superintendent Julius Fix, of the Watertown waterworks, kindly volunteered to come down last Thursday to advise our officers how to prevent stand pipes from freezing, and how to open them when frozen.  Under his direction John Angel climbed to the top of the standpipe and opened a hole through the ice which ended the trouble.  It was dangerous work but John did it without flinching.  Mr. Fix says the standpipes generally freeze when little water is consumed and that the trouble seldom occurs after the use of water becomes more general.  The superintendent and commissioners greatly appreciated the assistance of Mr. Fix.—[Jefferson Record]     WG
