Nickels-Turner (NT) collection of images

This set of images is from the Dr. Arnold C. Nichels family.  Dr. Nichels was a well-known physician in Watertown.  There are also some images taken by his son, Tommy.

These images come from his family album and show, among other things, a Ringling Brothers Circus parade on Main Street in 1915, the cyclone that hit the city in 1914, and many other interesting views of the city and parks.

The photos were brought to our attention by Frederic Kosanke, who also donated some photos he took of Watertown subjects in the 1940’s, and through the generosity of Mrs. Harvey Turner, Dr. Nichels’ daughter.

Prints of these images can be purchased through the society for $25 per image.  Please email if there are questions.

The circus parade image [NT094] is Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth, August 19, 1915.  The wagon is one of a set of tableau cages built about that year for Barnum & Bailey.  The only Watertown engagement between 1914 and 1918 was on the date noted.  This may have been cage #91.

The Ringling circus did not visit Watertown in 1915.

The wagon was with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth 1919-circa 1938, but the show was not in Watertown the two years that it paraded (1919-1920).
