      Porches being worked on yesterday.

Pertinent citation from more than 70 years ago:  1940.  The Board of Directors was often plagued with the question of what constituted good repairs.  Were the porches a part of that pressing need?  As early as June 1940, Architect George Fred Keck offered to draw plans for the porch restoration project.  A year later a five hundred dollar donation accompanied blueprints for the restoration of the verandas.  These funds were made available from the Honorable Joe. E. Davies, Ambassador to Belgium and Russia.  - John Richards: The Hill and The Mill, page 99.

04 22 11  Ben Feld [1922-2011], longtime educator in Watertown schools and a well-known area historian, died on Friday, April 22, 2011.

Feld had taught in Watertown schools for many years and was also an elementary school principal here.  Although he touched the lives of many children through his years as an educator, he reached many more through his love of local history.  Among his writings were “Criminating Evidence,” “The Burial of Thomas Bass,” “Watertown Squab Company,” “Peccadilloes in the Police Department,” “City Government 101,” “Milwaukee Street Bridge,” “Young Love” and many more.  Most of them are archived at the Watertown Historical Society website.

It was also Feld who brought the idea of expanding the popular Watertown Daily TimesGlimpses of the Past” column to include events of 100 years ago. For decades, he researched and produced the 100 years ago section for the Daily Times, continuing that work until about three years ago when slipping health forced him to leave the research he loved.  Since that time the 100 years ago glimpses were taken over by Ken Riedl, who expanded the column to include glimpses 150 years ago.

Feld’s greatest love was finding the unusual, bizarre and offbeat stories from the area and turning them into articles and/or books.  His work contributed much to the colorful history of Watertown and the surrounding area.

He was a World War II veteran, retiring as a major. He received his bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University and his master’s degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught school in Ohio and in Stevens Point before coming to Watertown where he served as a teacher and administrator for over 34 years.
