Street View: One element of our society is keeping an eye on options offered by new
and evolving technologies. I’d like to
share with you something I recently came across and while one can question its
application and raise possible privacy issues it is also exciting and offers
many possibilities.
I had
been monitoring Google’s several-year evaluation of “street view” images of a
few major U.S. cities. Street view
allows one to navigate a city at street level and the ability of pivot
horizontally (360 degrees) and vertically (approximately 130 degrees) and zoom
in and out while virtually driving down streets and taking in the view. Milwaukee, one of 30 such cities, had been
“google-ized” and when checked out it proved to offer what had been reported.
Even
more recently I heard that Madison had undergone the same treatment. When checking this out it was readily noted
that not only Wisconsin’s capitol city but portions of practically all cities
and towns of Dane, Dodge and Jefferson counties are now google-ized.
About a
third of Watertown is now viewable at street level. When I checked the differing views of the
former church building housing the local genealogy library I saw that they were
captured on a day when my car was parked in front of the 504 S. Fourth Street
entrance. A little investigation of
scenery and known changes (e.g., the aftermath of a known fire) allowed for the
conclusion that the imagery of Watertown was captured last fall.
So if
one knows an address one can use Google Maps “drive up to it” on your computer
monitor and take a clear and contemporary ground-level look around the
neighborhood. As long as Google has
driven its little car down a street and taken pictures of the neighborhood, the
images will be available as a feature in Google Maps.
One
might learn something . . . while having a lot of fun. [Caveat:
This streaming of images hardly works with a telephone connection to the
internet; one needs broadband or cable]
